9th-12th Grade Programs

The Omaha AHEC works to create a heightened awareness of the health professions among area young people with a particular emphasis on minority and other underserved and underrepresented students. This is accomplished through hands-on activities presented by licensed healthcare professionals; field trips to healthcare and health education settings; career shadowing opportunities with licensed professionals; health science simulation labs; summer camps based around health career exploration and much more.

See below for details on Omaha AHEC's 9th through 12th grade programming:

Health Careers Institute at Northwest High School

The Health Careers Institute (HCI) is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2013 semester. The mission of HCI is to effectively and efficiently prepare high school students for admission into pre-health profession programs of study at colleges, universities, and other career training institutions.

Job Shadowing Program

The Nebraska AHECs operate one of the largest job shadowing programs in the state. Over the years, hundreds and hundreds of students have enjoyed the opportunity to shadow health care professionals in Nebraska. Here in the Douglas and Sarpy county areas, job shadows are offered at sites in these fields: Neonatal care, Pediatrics, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, Radiology and others.

Classroom Presentations

The Omaha AHEC regularly conducts presentations in the classroom in a variety of topic areas. This may include providing an overview to health professions or career-specific presentations, or one of many health-related topics in nutrition (portion sizes and/or balanced diets), physical fitness activities, infection control, alcohol/tobacco prevention and others.
